The Doddie'5 Red Blend
A story of world-class wine, International Rugby, triumph over adversity and raising money for a great cause…
Maturation in oak barriques has softened the wine yet it still retains remarkable freshness. Medium-bodied with elegant red and black fruit, a silky texture and fabulous richness. It is already a delight to drink now with its soft, plush, juicy mid-palate but has the structure and acidity to age. Earthy, Velvety & Smoky.

Doddie Weir OBE is one of rugby’s most recognisable personalities. He earned 61 caps for Scotland during a successful playing career, represented the British and Irish Lions on their successful tour to South Africa in 1997, and won championships with his two club sides, Melrose and Newcastle Falcons.
A talented, committed and athletic lock forward, Doddie is now facing his biggest challenge. In June 2017 the Scot revealed he was suffering from Motor Neuron Disease. From the outset, Doddie has been driven to help fellow sufferers and seek ways to further research into this, as yet, incurable disease.
In November 2017, Doddie and his trustees launched the registered charity, My Name’5 Doddie Foundation. Their vision is simple: A World Free of MND.
The number “5” is a special number for the Foundation. It features in the Foundation’s name and is a reference to Doddie’s playing number for his clubs, Melrose and Newcastle Falcons, and the jersey he wore when he earned his 61 caps for Scotland.
Fellow International Lock forward and wine maker Schalk Burger has joined in the effort, creating a wine for Doddie to raise funds for the foundation.
The Doddie’5 is a Bordeaux blend made from their own vineyards in the Groenberg ward of Wellington in South Africa where soils are predominantly decomposed granite.
Paying homage to the #5 shirt worn by both Doddie and Schalk in their international days, the wine is a blend of five varieties: Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Mourvèdre and Petit Verdot.

The Driving Force
Ex England winger Simon Halliday, whose Sporting Wine Club has been instrumental in bringing the project to fruition, added: "It is truly inspirational and a credit to the Schalk Burger family for their commitment to Doddie and his fight against MND." Sporting Wine Club’s mission is to source estate-bottled, award-winning wines and spirits with a strong and authentic relationship to sport. Combining two of Doddie’s greatest passions - rugby and wine - the idea for ‘Doddie’5 Red Blend’ was born.
The story behind the label is an inspiring story in its own right. Saracens Academy member Henry Fraser was paralysed from the neck down aged just 17 after an accident in 2009, but has since composed some remarkable artwork. He paints with a brush held in his mouth and has created an amazing tartan label.
