The Chocolate Block by Boekenhoutskloof is a wine with secrets to keep. Although we don’t know where the name originates, the quest to understand the name and the wine itself is now the stuff of legend. Boekenhoutskloof believes that the Cape’s Mediterranean climate makes it eminently suited to blended reds, and this wine reflects that belief.
Available for only £20.99, exclusively at Cockburns of Leith. (was £25.99)
Tasting Note
First, boysenberry and dark cherry dominate an inviting nose. You will then notice gentle scents of violets and rose petals which complement intriguing whiffs of exotic spice. The brambly black and red fruits on the nose carry through to the palate, including flavours of ripe plums, black currant, dried cranberries, and blueberries. Additionally, slight hints of cured meat and espresso add complexity to the round, silky mid-palate. The fine, powdery tannins and fresh yet integrated acidity balance the mouth-coating texture of dark milk chocolate. Finally, licorice and subtle hints of crushed coriander and black cardamom linger on a smooth, soft finish. Overall, this medium-bodied wine is lithe and elegant.
Creating The Chocolate Block
The 2022 Chocolate Block is a blend of 77% Syrah, 9% Grenache, 8% Cinsault, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Viognier. They tweak the make-up from vintage to vintage to best reflect the season and the vines. The ancient vines of great character are an integral part of the wine’s charm and personality. The winemakers whole-berry ferment the grapes in a combination of concrete and stainless steel fermenters without making any additions. After spontaneous fermentation, they transferred the juice to 95% seasoned and 5% new French Barrique. The élevage ranged between 12-14 months, depending on variety. They are only 3951 barrels of this vintage, so make sure to pick some up while you can!
The Chocolate Block Vinification
The Chocolate Block 2022 marks the 21st vintage of this iconic wine. Cold winter conditions resulted in a slow start to the 2022 growing season, with late budding and a late veraison. Frequent rain showers ensured lush canopy growth, thus protecting clusters from sporadic sunburn during the hot December conditions and the January heat peaks. Consequently, this vintage had lower-than-average yields, leading to perfumed, aromatic, and elegant fruit with balanced tannins.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER
Boekenhoutskloof is a South African producer and Syrah specialist. The Chocolate Block, a Syrah based blend, is probably the most successful new wine offering to come out of South Africa in the modern era.
Established in 1776, it is located in the furthest corner of the beautiful Franschhoek valley. The name means “ravine of the Boekenhout”, which is an indigenous Cape Beech tree.
Marc Kent bought and restored the farm in 1993 and established Boekenhoutskloof winery. He established a new vineyard planting programme, which today includes Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Semillon and Viognier.
