International Chardonnay Day 2020 Case

£215.87 £199.00

This case contains a selection of wines from across the world, to celebrate International Chardonnay Day 2020. You’ll find fresh styles, for example from the Cleray Chardonnay in the cool mouth of Loire Valley, totally unoaked but still unmistakeably true to the variety. Also the Marea which comes from Chile’s new discovery of the cool coastal freshness in Leyda. And of course, the greatest cool climate expressions of the grape from Champagne and Chablis.

The Burgundies here are fresher and fruitier, the Rully is especially good value in a region where prices are ever increasing, made by a hot producer on top of her game.

The new world offers better quality than ever, especially from our point of view in South Africa where they manage to achieve great balance in their wines. The Constantia Uitsig, taken form the smallest vineyard in this historic estate, is possibly our favourite in the case.

Our ‘Alternative Sauvignon Blancs’ mixed case is designed to showcase a selection of wines from outside the well-known areas of Marlborough and Loire valley.

You’ll find cool crisp examples: Marea is a standout made in the cool coastal region of Leyda in Chile, it really does have a salty tang of the sea. Similarly the South African examples have a great freshness, the Constantia Uitsig is one of the most refined Sauvignons we have tasted in years. You’ll also find some elegance from the cool Dolomites in the North of Italy in the Castel Firmian.

The more exuberant fruity styles are to be found – perhaps surprisingly – in Rioja. The Nube charmed us with its tropical and peach aromas. The Haut Poitou is not your typical Loire example: the nose offers hints of passion fruit and mango while the palate retains the balance and finesse of a good Sancerre.

We hope this will make for a fun exploration and perhaps you may discover a new favourite.

  • Joseph Perrier Blanc de Blancs NV

The nose is elegant and complex. Aromas of white flowers, apricot and Mirabelle plums. The palate has plenty of fresh citrus notes and lively acidity, some touches of spice and vanilla, rich brioche elements and a long lemony finish.

  • Chardonnay, Domaine du Cléray

A dead ringer for Chablis, this wine comes from a small property in the cool Loire valley. Oyster shell and crisp green apple, a complex and refreshing wine.

  • Chablis, Domaine Vrignaud

Pale yellow colour with lime tints. Citrus flavours mixed with white flower aromas. A touch of delicacy that highlights a fruity and balanced character

  • Rully Blanc Montagne 'La Folie', Claudie Jobard

With wonderful aromas of toasted almonds, a little vanilla and a nutty aspect, Citrus and steel on the palate, with crushed stone and honeyed citrus with a minerally freshness.

  • Bouchard Mâcon-Lugny St Pierre

Fresh nose offering a lovely bouquet of wildflowers, on the palate flavours of ripe apple and pear with citrus and nutty hints. Beautifully fresh, very perfumed and nicely rounded.

  • Chardonnay Le Jade

Youthful and fruity, with a fragrant and persistent aroma and slightly toasted nuances: such a clean, refreshing modern chardonnay.  The taste is juicy and round with white fruits and honeysuckle, and just a touch of oak to round things off. I have to say that this new chardonnay will be a real go to wine.

  • Chardonnay 'Atrium' Familia Torres

Brilliant gold colour. Exquisite dried fruit aroma as well as hazelnuts and praline with distinctive characteristics of the Chardonnay variety, very fresh with white peach and vanilla, intense, silky and lively, culminating in an elegant finish reminiscent of bitter almond marzipan.

  • Sons de Prades Chardonnay, Vinyes de Milmanda, Familia Torres

Straw-coloured wine with golden highlights. Fresh floral (broom) and fruit (ripe pineapple) aromas along with tropical fruits, toasted oak, nutty with apple and pear notes. Luscious, with delicate extract and a clean dry finish.

  • Chardonnay, Marea

Bright yellow colour with golden tints. Fragrant nose with aromas of pineapple, peach, and citrus notes. In the mouth, it has great volume, silkiness and acidity, with lasting notes of pineapple and peach, and a minerality that shows true expression of the terroir.

  • Chardonnay, Heggies Vineyard

The palate opens with stone fruit and builds to the mouth-filling complexity and texture of warm brioche. Interest is held by a rich creamy finish. All Heggies Vineyard wines show an excellent minerality that contributes to the length and finesse.

  • Estate Chardonnay, Linton Park

A beautiful elegant crisp Chardonnay, bursting with aromas of bright fruit of a lime-lemon purity and fresh tangerine. The lively aromas are followed onto the palate filled with fruit characters. The finish is well balanced and lingering with clean citrus notes on aftertaste.

  • Reserve Chardonnay, Constantia Uitsig

An abundance of green melon, juicy red apples and lemon zest on the nose prepares you for what’s to follow…. a yeasty texture coupled with a lively, concentrated palate of apple, fresh tangerine and moreish complexity, leading to a superbly long finish.

To celebrate International Chardonnay Day we’ve put together a mixed case of a single varietal that is close to his heart.

Chardonnay can sometimes get a hard press. This is mainly due to the historic winemaking styles employed especially in the new world. Sadly this has caused many to turn their back on what I still consider to be probably the finest white grape variety (although Riesling would have something to say about that!). Chardonnay still makes up the largest portion of my own cellar.

Things have changed in the world of Chardonnay, even in its homeland of Burgundy. Freshness is the watchword across the world, even in the richer styles, winemaking techniques are used to ensure there is acidity and drive in the wines. Almost everyone is using less oak, and less new barrels, lees aging is common giving mouthfeel and body without richness.
